2009 FASS Conference

Dr Genie Scott the director of NCSE spoke with the Science Supervisors on April 7, 2009.  She did a really great job. The discussion centered around the issues of evolution and creationism and how to deal with objections to new science standards on evolution.  Brandon Haught from FCS then gave a talk based on his Florida’s Greatest Menace series on the FCS blog. This talk described the history of creationism here in Florida.  It was excellent, informative and in places very humorous. We received many great comments on both talks, the supervisors seemed to really appreciate both of them.
Later during lunch, Joe Wolf (FCS President) and Brandon received their NCSE “Friends of Darwin” award bestowed very appropriately by Genie Scott.

In the afternoon Dr. Scott spoke to the Cafi Scientific run by FCS board member Kathy Savage. Kathy has the Cafi for her students at the school where she teaches chemistry.  Dr. Scott spoke for a few minutes and then answered questions from the students. Part of the expenses for Dr Scott’s trip was covered by the FCS and we thank all our members for making this possible,it was money well spent. We made many new allies at the FASS Conference and we look forward to a maintaining this relationship in the future.

Hat Tip to Joe Wolf for this report.
