A letter was sent out from the principal of Heritage Middle School, Deltona, Florida, concerning an 8th grade science lesson I wrote about in a previous post. The letter was posted on the public Facebook page of the parent who originally complained about the lesson.

So when is it, important for our kids to challenge authority? At what age do we tell them that it’s now fine to challenge statements made by teachers, parents, preachers and alike?
Do we not want our kids to ask questions, to think critically, to be able to challenge with in any social group. Surly we want students to be able to say to a teacher, “I’m not sure I agree with the point you just made.”
Do teachers tell their students that this point of view is only for the class room?
Do we really want kids who blindly follow the pack and say little or nothing when faced with the obviously wrong?
Ivorygirl – I’m sure for different reasons than yourself, I would agree that evolution is triumphantly a theory as proclaimed in the full quote. But who makes the determination what is obviously wrong?
Chris- My point does not deal with just evolution, kids are open to all kinds of issues, even dangers in this day and age. Blindly following adults, well, we all know what that may lead to. It’s very likely that kids determinations could be wrong(they usually are) bit we should not suppress them either.
Ivorygirl- I did take it you were’t just talking about evolution. I think your 100% correct. Following anyone, child or adult blindly can have detrimental consequences. A portion of Proverbs 21:2 says, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,” With that in mind, who or what should a person look to for the correct answers. Science with its retractions, curves and changes has been said to be the right path. Others like Jim Jones, Hitler or Dawkins have said they have the truth. But as you’ve pointed out in this day and age the dangers of false facts are everywhere. With the accumulation of all that is happening today around the world and in our own country the realities point to some very rough days ahead. What’s amazing is the Bible talks about a time just like this leading into the Tribulation Period.
