LAKELAND — A lecture series sponsored by a local center for science and religion will address a question of ultimate significance over the next four weeks: Where do we come from?
The fall lecture series of the Florida Center for Science and Religion, “Our Place in the Universe: Theological and Scientific Aspects of Cosmology,” will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at College Heights United Methodist Church, 942 South Blvd., in Lakeland. The first lecture, on the origins and composition of the universe, will be delivered by Humberto Campins, professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Central Florida.
The series will continue Sept. 19 at the planetarium at Florida Southern College with a presentation of images from the Hubble Space Telescope and commentary by Mossayeb Jamshid, professor of physics and astronomy at the college. On Sept. 26, Creston Davis, associate professor of religion at Rollins College in Winter Park, will discuss theological implications of recent findings in cosmology. The three speakers will convene for a panel discussion Oct. 3.
All programs will be at 7 p.m. and all will be at College Heights United Methodist except the planetarium show. They are free and open to the public.
