Senate Judiciary committee meeting scheduled

The Judiciary Committee’s staff review is here. Our post tracking both the Senate and House bills is here.

The Florida Senate Judiciary committee will consider SB2692, the creationism bill (so-called “academic freedom”):

On Committee agenda– Judiciary, 04/08/08, 10:45 am, 110-S

I’ve been calling the committee members. Have you?

Well, I sent my e-mail messages. Strange that of all the members of the committee, only Senator Webster does not have a hot e-mail link on his profile. I assumed that his would follow the same format as the others, though, and it was not kicked back.

I made the usual points but also brought up the fact that the standards are used to generate FCAT science tests as well as the FTCE tests used to certify teachers. Ostensibly, giving non-scientific ideas equal billing in the classroom would imply that they are fair game for inclusion on these tests. My observation was that this was probably not what the legislature (as a whole) has in mind.

Ditto that, but mine was returned. I called and got this address
    from his aide:

    webster.daniel.s09@flsenate.gov

    and that is … ess/zero/niner

  3. James F says:

Thanks for the address, Captdave – I am now done with emails.

Oops, I had spoken too soon. When I got home from school, it had indeed been bounced back (as well as one in which I mis-typed the name). I only checked my personal e-mail one time from school yesterday as it is a bit of a chore to access and I guess the messages were still flowing through those tubes.

I’ve been using my personal e-mail to send messages like this, not wanting to contravene our district’s instructions about using school e-mail for political purposes. I suppose I could argue that the purpose is really educational but I’m not about to get in a semantic battle with them.

Thanks for the correct address for Senator Webster, Captdave.

Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill (unfortunately) 7-3 – no vote tally has been published yet – but I spoke with Sen. Geller’s staff this morning and he was going to vote and speak against it apparently.
