Darwin lives!

Darwin the manatee that is.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL — A male manatee, weighing half a ton, was released into the wild Friday in St. Johns County after a year long recovery from injury.

Huey is a volunteer with Florida Fish and Wildlife. Almost exactly a year ago, Huey helped rescue the manatee from an area by Comanchee Cove in St. Augustine.

While being rescued, the injured manatee ended up injuring Huey.

“They’re huge and have a lot of strength and when you’re on the tail that’s the part where you can get injured pretty badly,” he said

Now, with 300 added pounds and with a new name, Darwin the manatee has been brought back to the spot where Huey helped rescue him.
