Dr. Scott fires back

We at Florida Citizens for Science brought Mr. Fisher’s guest column to Dr. Eugenie Scott’s attention, since she was quotied by him. She didn’t like what she saw, and so she fired off a response which was published today:

By Dr. Eugenie C. Scott

In his (Oct. 5) column berating the position of Jonathan Smith and those of the Florida Citizens For Science, Guy Fisher misrepresents my views and misunderstands the nature of science.
He failed to quote my entire sentence, which continued, “but as we have seen, a theory can be scientific even if its phenomena are not directly observable.” And, of course paleontology, which infers the course of evolution from the snapshots preserved in the fossil record, is a fine example.
